Another method of sustainability is to grow organic coffee beans.  When chemical pesticides and fertilizers are used, they can get into the water supply and render it useless or harmful for those depending on it.  There is a natural abundance of organic material, even the coffee hulls themselves, that can be used to fertilize and protect the trees.

A great deal of water is used in the wet process of separating the bean from the pulp.  Sustainable farming methods strive to use ways that limit the amount of water required, dispose of the water in sanitary ways, and/or filter the water so it can be reused for irrigation.

To buy sustainable coffee beans, check for internationally recognized organic symbols on the packaging.  Organic coffee beans are typically grown in eco-friendly, sustainable ways.  Also check for fair trade symbols.  This tells you that the workers received fair compensation for picking and processing the beans and that the coffee was purchased directly from the growers at fair prices.Although sustainable coffee costs more per cup than mass produced varieties, the difference is truly negligible and the quality of the product typically higher.
